Cambridge Calling: the story of Sasha and Fedor’s marvelous discoveries
Sasha and Fedor's summer holidays started unusually: instead of the usual walks in the yard, they were going to go to the UK - to the MPW Cambridge camp.
When our students set foot on English soil, they realized that it would be not just a holiday, but a real adventure!
They got off the transfer and felt the wind bring the aromas of old books and freshly brewed tea. There was a feeling as if in a Harry Potter film. Looking into the endless streets of Cambridge, they thought that wizards definitely lived here.
They had many courses and lessons, of course, in English. They had various lectures and played their favorite game Kahoot. And then it was only more interesting…..
They went on various excursions to London, many walks around Cambridge, visited various colleges, museums, and most importantly, they went shopping (where without it), went to the cafes, not a camp, but a DREAM.
And the most important - Sasha and Fedor met our dear volunteer teacher, Christine Stanley! 😄
Our students' experience of the trip
Sasha: “Hi there, my name is Sasha and this summer I got the opportunity to attend a camp in the UK thankfully to Svitlo School!
Our days started from the walks to our school, which helped us to get ready for lessons and an active day in general.
At school, we had breakfast, and then we had 3 classes: 2 main (psychology) and 1 additional (1 week - resilience, 2 - public speaking). In my free time between classes, I communicated with my friends and other students as well. It's worth noting what great people I met - everyone is very nice, friendly and funny!
After classes, we always had two activities, for which I am really grateful, because each day it was something absolutely unique!
For instance, on the first day we went punting on the river Cam - we sailed on the river and looked at all the colleges, and then we went doing “team building” where we got to know each other better, did timed tasks in teams and played Mafia!
Lectures, escape rooms, parties like Silent Disco (we put on headphones and played musical chairs, in which I won, by the way 🥰🥰), movies, shopping and walks with friends - we had it all!
The sixth day was the most anticipated - a trip to London! But London's weather decided to make us “happy” with heavy rain and wind, although it didn't make a bad impression on the day! The only thing we missed was a walk around the city, seeing Big Ben and Tower Bridge.
The next day, Fedor and I had the opportunity to meet our most favorite teacher Christine Stanley - an extremely bright, kind and positive person!!!! She treated us with milkshakes and handed over gifts from Yulia - super cute! 😄 We even met her husband and youngest son.)
The tenth day is my favourite one! It started with a lecture ‘Imagining Multispecies World’ at Corpus Christi College, then we visited the Museum of Zoology and then Kings Chapel!!! Honestly, it was the most beautiful place I've ever visited!!!🥹🥹 And the day ended with a karaoke night, which at first didn't seem like a good idea because no one could sing, but in fact it was so cool and fun that now I want to go to karaoke with my friends!!!🙈
On the penultimate day we went to London again and met the guys and girls from MPW London! We had a really great party and even those few hours were enough for me to make friends with the girls from there!
The last day was very busy, my friends and I tried to spend as much time together as possible! As for the courses I chose, I really liked all of them, especially Resilience, because we often talked and wrote nice things to each other, did interesting tasks, and gave & received feedback!
In general, the whole camp was a very important event in my life, since I had not imagined that something like that may happen to me so soon. This is literally one of my biggest dreams coming true! A huge THANK YOU to Yulia and Daria for everything they did for us! ❤️🔥❤️🔥”
Fedor: “Hello, my name is Fedor and I attended the MPW Cambridge summer camp in the UK. Every day was interesting and full of activities. We were woken up at seven in the morning so that by seven forty-five we could get up, do all our chores and be ready to go to school. It took about twenty minutes to get there, just in time for morning exercises in the fresh air.
There we had breakfast in the dining room and went to our respective courses. There were many of them: medicine and sciences, business and finance, art and design, higher mathematics, politics and law, psychology and robotics, and computer science, which was the course I was taking. For example, there we wrote code on a computer and assembled and tried to program a small machine that would avoid obstacles. Then there were also week-long courses that the camp itself assigned us to, and I had a critical thinking course.
Then we always did something or went somewhere: to a cafe with board games, to an escape room, went on excursions around the city, for example, visited Kings and Queens colleges, saw them both from the outside and a little inside. We even went to London and rode the famous London Eye. Sometimes we were left alone and walked around the zones in groups to explore everything ourselves.
We had free time in the evening, after nine o'clock, when we returned from our activities. Some of us went to rest, others gathered in groups and had fun in their own way. We stayed in a four-storey building and on the ground floor there was a common room with sofas and ottomans.”
When they returned home, their friends couldn't believe that camp could be so much fun. Sasha and Fedor, full of impressions, began to talk about their “space” holidays and amazing traditions. This camp is not just about learning. It's real magic. And so, thanks to Svitlo School, Sasha and Fedor became real travelers, ready for new challenges and surprises!
